The UN Secretary-General is tasked with presenting options for a successor mechanism, which may range from a limited force of approximately 1,980 personnel to a larger presence of about 5,525 members. Legal analysis indicates that any bilateral or trilateral political agreements cannot supersede the international obligations of Resolution 1701 without a new Security Council resolution.
