Israel destroys major Hezbollah tunnel network in southern Lebanon
The Israel Defense Forces announced that it detonated roughly 700 tonnes of explosives to demolish a large underground tunnel system used by Hezbollah in the Qalaat al‑Shakif (Bofar) highlands of southern Lebanon. The operation was carried out by the IDF’s 36th Division under the Northern Command and was presented as a response to a cease‑fire breach that Hezbollah allegedly committed on 27 June.
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defence Minister Yoav Katz jointly proclaimed the strike, stating that Israel will remain in the southern‑Lebanon security zone and continue to eliminate terrorist infrastructure. The tunnels, described as a strategic infrastructure built over two decades, served as a command centre for Hezbollah’s “Bader” unit and were reportedly funded and planned by Iran.
The United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk warned that Israeli actions could amount to war crimes, and the UN investigative mission has been collecting evidence since early March, when Lebanese authorities reported more than 4,300 deaths and over 12,200 injuries in the wider conflict.
