Israel Detains About 48 Haredi Yeshiva Students Amid Exploitation Allegations

Around 48 Haredi yeshiva students are currently held in an Israeli military prison, with recent arrests including six at recruitment offices and one on Highway 6. Rabbi Chaim Karitz, head of the aid organization “Help and Protection,” warned that many of these youths have fallen victim to exploitative middlemen—lawyers and “maʼakherim”—who charge up to 10,000 shekels per student, claiming that roughly 90 % of the detainees either paid the fees or were scammed.

Deputy mayor of Bnei Brak, Gadi Silman, used a televised program to criticize the broader Haredi education system and recent government budget proposals, linking the arrests to long‑standing tensions over conscription and funding for Haredi institutions. He warned that the current policies could threaten the continuity of traditional Torah study.
