Israel detains Gaza flotilla activists amid abuse allegations

In May 2026, Israeli forces intercepted the Global Sumud Flotilla, a humanitarian convoy of more than 425 volunteers, doctors, parliamentarians and activists attempting to break Israel's siege of Gaza. Hundreds were seized on Israeli naval vessels and taken to detention boats. Participants described severe mistreatment, including beatings, rubber‑bullet and bean‑bag injuries, sexual violence, flash‑bangs and being doused with “skunk water.”

National Security Minister Itamar Ben‑Gvir oversaw the operation and released a video of the raid that drew swift protests from European diplomats. The activists and observers say the harsh treatment was staged as a public spectacle to deter future solidarity actions, highlighting what they view as punitive, humiliating tactics used by the Israeli far‑right against humanitarian volunteers. The incident has prompted international condemnation and renewed scrutiny of Israel's blockade of Gaza.
