Israel detains Gaza flotilla activists, releases many amid abuse claims

A flotilla of over 100 vessels carrying several hundred activists set out this spring to break Israel's blockade of Gaza and deliver humanitarian aid. Israeli forces intercepted the convoy, seized the boats and detained the participants.

Activists allege severe mistreatment while in custody, including beatings, denial of food and water, and sexual abuse. NRK reported claims of “humiliating naked strip searches, sexual humiliation, genital groping, and several reports of rape.” Italy has opened a probe into possible kidnapping, torture and sexual offenses against Italian citizens.

On 21 May Israel released 430 detainees, among them four Norwegians, while deporting others to Turkey, including Canadian nationals. The episode has sparked diplomatic criticism and calls for accountability.
