Israel E1 settlement project draws condemnation from Palestinian Authority and Germany

The Israeli government has issued a tender for more than 1,200 new housing units as part of the E1 settlement project in the occupied West Bank. This project, which aims to build a total of over 3,400 units on approximately 12 square kilometers of Palestinian land, seeks to link settlements in East Jerusalem to the Maale Adumim settlement bloc.

The Palestinian Authority has condemned the move, warning that the project would result in Palestinians being confined to “disconnected enclaves surrounded by settlements.” Critics argue the plan would effectively bisect the West Bank and sever East Jerusalem from Palestinian territory, potentially ending the prospect of a two-state solution.

The German government also issued a sharp condemnation, stating that the settlement expansion violates international law and UN Security Council resolutions. German officials noted that the project would practically divide the West Bank in two and urged Israel to stop the implementation, reiterating that Germany only recognizes 1967 borders that are mutually agreed upon by the conflicting parties.
