Israel election: Netanyahu faces security criticism and challenge from Gadi Eisenkot

As Israel approaches a general election on October 27, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu faces significant challenges regarding his leadership and national security credentials. Critics have accused him of failing to protect the country, specifically citing the October 7, 2023, Hamas attacks and a recent attempted attack on a flydubai flight. Some reports suggest that the United Arab Emirates and Egypt may have provided warnings prior to the October 7 incident.

Netanyahu has defended his record by stating he has significantly weakened Israel’s enemies, including Hamas in Gaza and Hezbollah in Lebanon. However, security analysts suggest that public confidence in his ability to ensure national safety remains a primary hurdle for his reelection campaign.

Emerging as Netanyahu’s principal challenger is Gadi Eisenkot, the former 21st Chief of Staff of the Israel Defense Forces. Eisenkot, who rose through the ranks of the Golani Brigade to become deputy chief of staff, has rapidly gained political momentum. His candidacy follows a historical trend in Israel where former military leaders transition into high-level political roles, leveraging their security expertise to appeal to voters.
