Israel election results lead to political deadlock

Israel faces a period of political uncertainty following national elections that resulted in a hung parliament. Neither the right-wing bloc led by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu nor the centrist opposition alliance led by Gadi Eisenkot secured the 61 seats required to form a majority in the 120-seat Knesset.

Netanyahu’s bloc won 53 seats, including 27 for the Likud party, while the opposition bloc led by Eisenkot and the Yashar party secured 48 seats. Arab-led parties achieved a significant breakthrough, collectively winning 19 seats. While these parties could potentially act as kingmakers, leaders such as Naftali Bennett and Avigdor Liberman have expressed opposition to any government relying on their support.

President Isaac Herzog is tasked with negotiating with party leaders to form a coalition. Political leaders have 12 weeks to establish a government before new elections may be required. Amidst the deadlock, allegations have surfaced regarding foreign interference, with reports suggesting millions of dollars from sources including Qatar were allegedly used to influence Arab Israeli voters. Netanyahu’s Likud party has claimed the elections were stolen.
