Israel elections see surge in AI-generated deepfakes

The upcoming Israeli legislative elections on October 27 are being heavily influenced by the widespread use of artificial intelligence and deepfake technology. Political parties are utilizing AI to create controversial videos, deploy social media bots, and conduct automated voter calls.

Research from the Ze Be AI project at the Open University of Israel indicates that the Likud party, led by Benjamin Netanyahu, has been a primary user of these technologies, publishing over 1,800 AI-generated posts by mid-October. This accounts for approximately one-quarter of all analyzed campaign material.

Specific instances of AI manipulation include a video showing Netanyahu in a fabricated conversation with the late Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar, and a controversial clip depicting candidate Gadi Eisenkot embracing Arab politician Mansour Abbas in a manner intended to provoke emotional responses. The Israeli Central Election Commission has already intervened in rare instances to order the removal of certain deepfake content.
