Israel eliminates Hamas Rafah Brigade commander Nael Abu Obeid
Israel has eliminated Nael Abu Obeid, the commander of Hamas’s Rafah Brigade and head of the organization’s military operations array, in an airstrike in the southern Gaza Strip. The IDF identified Abu Obeid as a central figure in Hamas’s senior military leadership who was tasked with rebuilding military capabilities and directing attacks against Israeli forces and civilians.
This strike follows the previous elimination of Abu Obeid’s predecessor, Muhammad Shabana, in May 2025. Israeli leadership, including Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defense Minister Israel Katz, stated that the military objective is to prevent Hamas from rebuilding its command structure and military infrastructure in Gaza.
The escalation occurs within a broader regional conflict involving various actors. Since the October 7, 2023, attacks, the conflict has expanded to include Hezbollah in Lebanon, Houthi rebels in Yemen, and pro-Iranian militias in Iraq. The regional instability has included direct military engagements involving Iran and threats to international maritime security in the Red Sea and the Strait of Hormuz.
