Israel expands de facto control by 1,000 sq km across Gaza, Lebanon and Syria

An Al Jazeera open‑source investigation found that Israeli forces have established a de facto military footprint covering roughly 1,000 sq km (about 386 sq mi) in the Gaza Strip, southern Lebanon and southern Syria. The area represents around five percent of Israel’s pre‑October 2023 landmass, including its occupied territories.

The probe describes a pattern of “strategic deception” and “geographic engineering”. While official maps announce a “Yellow Line” boundary after cease‑fire agreements, satellite imagery shows the line repeatedly pushed outward and demolitions carried out beyond declared zones. Analysts say the expansion serves to mask Israel’s inability to achieve its war objectives, provide leverage for political concessions, and offer psychological reassurance to the Israeli public.

Experts quoted include Ehab Jabareen, who calls the policy “calculated chaos”, and Mohannad Mustafa, who notes the expansion functions as an alternative to decisive military victories. The investigation highlights the broader security, ideological and psychological dimensions of Israel’s territorial gains.
