Israel's expanding regional control & Iran strike readiness

Entities: Hezbollah · Lebanon · Nawaf Salam · Joseph Aoun · United States

Overview

By late June 2026 Israel had de‑facto annexed most of Gaza, large settlement blocs in the West Bank and a security strip in southern Lebanon, presenting the moves as a “quiet” annexation. A three‑party framework with the United States and Lebanon pledged a staged Israeli withdrawal from zones along the Litani River once Hezbollah was disarmed, while UN teams warned of worsening humanitarian conditions in Gaza and condemned settlement expansion east of Jerusalem. In early July Israeli officials outlined plans to move Palestinians from Hamas‑controlled Gaza areas to fenced “humanitarian shelters” near Rafah under a multinational board. On 5 July the IDF detained roughly one hundred members of the HaBashan Pioneers who crossed the Israel‑Syria buffer zone on Mount Hermon, describing the breach as a serious crime and using severe force during arrests. Simultaneously, IDF operations targeted three fronts: an 800‑metre underground tunnel in Gaza was destroyed; more than 60 alleged terrorists were arrested in the West Bank, with caches of cash, weapons, drones and other material seized; and Israeli airstrikes hit Hezbollah operatives, command centres and a drone‑assembly facility in southern Lebanon, including sites in Bint Jbeil, Beit Jahan, Kounine and Braachit. Defence Minister Israel Katz reiterated on 7 July that Israeli forces will remain in the roughly 10‑km security zone in southern Lebanon without external permission until Hezbollah is fully disarmed, and warned the army is on high alert and prepared to resume offensive operations against Iran, including a possible third strike with “even greater force.” On 9 July Defence Minister Yoav Katz told an air‑force graduation that Israel would act alone to strike Iran if necessary and reaffirmed that the army will stay in southern Lebanon without any permission.
