Israel faces escalating diplomatic isolation and ICC indictments over Gaza war

The International Criminal Court issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Defence Minister Yoav Gallant, accusing them of war crimes and crimes against humanity following the Gaza conflict that killed more than 70,000 Palestinians and left the strip in ruins.

In response, the European Union, France, Germany, Italy and the United States have imposed sanctions on Israeli officials and settlement organizations, restricting travel and freezing assets. The EU’s trade‑agreement with Israel, which grants preferential market access, is now in jeopardy as foreign ministers consider pausing the deal.

These measures follow a long‑standing warning by former defence minister Ehud Barak about a “diplomatic tsunami” that would follow increased Israeli settlement activity and the push for Palestinian statehood. The recent legal actions and sanctions mark a significant shift in Israel’s international standing, with growing calls for accountability and pressure to change its policies in the occupied territories.
