Israel faces unusual summer rain and flash flood risks
The Israel Meteorological Service has forecasted an unusual period of summer rain, bringing risks of heavy showers and localized flooding. While August is typically characterized by dry heat, moisture from Greece and cooler air are expected to trigger thunderstorms, particularly in the eastern part of the country.
Authorities have indicated that police will be deployed to monitor areas at risk of flooding. Flash floods are a specific concern in desert channels and low-lying stream areas that can fill rapidly during intense bursts of rain. This weather pattern is potentially linked to the “Super El Niño” phenomenon, which is shifting global weather patterns and allowing cooler air to dip further south than usual.
Despite the potential for rain, extreme heat persists in several regions. Forecasted highs include 104 degrees Fahrenheit in Beit She'an and Ein Gedi, while Eilat is expected to reach 108 degrees Fahrenheit.
