Unusual summer rainfall and flooding in Israel

Overview

The Israel Meteorological Service initially forecasted an unusual period of summer rain and flash flood risks, potentially linked to a “Super El Niño” phenomenon. While extreme heat was expected to persist in some regions, authorities prepared for thunderstorms and rapid flooding in desert channels and low-lying areas.

This forecast materialized into what meteorological officials described as a “historical event” as Jerusalem and surrounding areas experienced unprecedented summer flooding. In Ma'ale Adumim, rainfall reached 25 mm, a massive increase compared to the previous August record of 1 mm set nearly a century ago.

The extreme weather necessitated rescue operations to evacuate residents from flooded neighborhoods in eastern and southern Jerusalem. Authorities closed sections of Route 90, and flash floods were reported in Wadi Qelt and the Dead Sea region.
