Israel government seeks budget support ahead of October elections

As Israel approaches elections scheduled for late October, the government is seeking opposition support for a NIS 101 million budget transfer to the Interior Ministry. The funding includes NIS 12.8 million for election logistics, such as managing the voter registry and distributing notifications. Other requested allocations include NIS 42 million for a five-year development program for Druze and Circassian communities, NIS 37 million for a food-voucher program associated with Shas chairman Aryeh Deri, and NIS 46 million for expenses related to the annual Lag Ba’omer gathering in Meron.

The political landscape is further complicated by the role of Palestinian political parties within Israel. While historically excluded from coalition formations, these parties have previously acted as a ‘safety net’ for governments, such as in 1993, in exchange for increased budgets and civic concessions. As the current race between the far-right coalition and the opposition remains tight, the influence of the 1948 Palestinian community's voters and parties is becoming increasingly significant.
