Israel Haredi Protest Over Draft Exemptions Mobilizes Thousands

Former Sephardic Chief Rabbi Yitzhak Yosef will lead a large rally in Bnei Brak to protest Israel's military draft policy for the ultra‑Orthodox community after recent arrests of yeshiva students accused of evading service.

Thousands of drivers from 19 Israeli cities formed convoys that blocked major highways, including Highway 1, causing severe traffic disruptions. The protest, organized by Haredi groups, aimed to show solidarity with detained yeshiva students. Reports indicated several violent incidents: a shooter brandishing a handgun on Highway 1, a serious injury to a woman, and attacks on public officials and participants in Beitar Illit, Arad and near Tel Aviv. Organizers accused police of attempting to suppress the demonstrations.

Rav Meir Tzvi Bergman sent a recorded message to the detainees, and the rally was described as peaceful in Bnei Brak, focusing on prayer rather than road blockades.
