Israel incursions and sectarian fighting fuel crisis in southern Syria

Fighting between government‑aligned forces, including Bedouin militias, and Druze factions has raged for six days in Syria’s southern Suweida province. Dozens have been killed after a clash sparked by the robbery and kidnapping of a Druze merchant, prompting retaliatory attacks and anti‑Druze hate speech online. Syrian special forces entered the city on 13 July, raising concerns of sectarian bias, while Druze leaders called for a stand‑down agreement. At the same time, Israel carried out airstrikes on Syrian armored columns, saying it was protecting Druze communities.

On a separate incident, Israeli military vehicles crossed into the southwestern Quneitra province, moving toward the Kudna Dam. No clashes or casualties were reported. The incursion is part of a pattern of Israeli operations in southern Syria following the collapse of Bashar al‑Assad’s government, with Israel asserting that the 1974 disengagement agreement no longer applies.
