Israel incursions into southern Syria

Entities: Asaad al‑Shaibani · Israel · Syria · Antonio Guterres · Yitzhak Katz

Overview

In late June 2026 Israel began ground and artillery raids in Daraa and Quneitra, setting up checkpoints, searching homes and killing two men it called “armed terrorists.” The actions displaced about two thousand civilians and drew condemnation for violating the 1974 disengagement agreement.

In mid‑July fighting erupted in Suweida province between government‑aligned Bedouin militias and Druze groups, killing dozens. Israeli airstrikes on Syrian armored columns were claimed as protection for Druze communities, and Israeli vehicles moved toward the Kudna Dam without reported clashes.

On 25 July Israeli troops entered the western Daraa countryside, driving three vehicles and a bulldozer toward Maʿriya and Al‑Arda, opening a road, installing a barrier and a checkpoint that halted traffic for about 90 minutes. A protest outside the UN office in Quneitra demanded information on abducted residents; Israel released two young men held for roughly seven months. The Syrian monitoring centre Sijil logged at least 57 Israeli violations across Quneitra, Daraa and the Damascus countryside between 15‑21 July.

The following day, 26 July, Israeli forces again moved into the Daraa region with three armored vehicles and a tractor, reopening a road and further fortifying the Al‑Arda checkpoint. Artillery shells landed in agricultural fields near Taranja in northern Quneitra, causing no injuries or damage. UN Secretary‑General Antonio Guterres, visiting Syria, condemned the incursions as violations of Syria’s sovereignty and the 1974 Disengagement Agreement, calling for an immediate withdrawal and promising a Security Council report. Israeli Defence Minister Yitzhak Katz reiterated that Israel will remain indefinitely in the “security zone” to protect its communities. Protests continued outside the UN Disengagement Observer Force headquarters in Quneitra.
