Israel Katz pushes for permanent Nahal outposts in northern Gaza

Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz announced plans to establish three permanent Nahal outposts in northern Gaza, describing the settlements as a military‑civilian model that would strengthen Israel’s hold on the border area. During a tour of the strip, Katz said the outposts would improve security and expressed a “good feeling” at the destruction of Hamas infrastructure.

Katz’s proposal, first unveiled in late 2025, marks a shift from previous Israeli statements that opposed civilian settlement in Gaza and contrasts with U.S. policy expectations. He noted that the IDF now controls about 65% of Gaza and that roughly 70,000 Hamas and affiliated fighters have been killed or neutralized since the war began. The plan aims to create lasting Israeli military presence in areas that housed settlements before the 2005 withdrawal.
