Israel Gaza settlement push intensifies ahead of elections

Entities: Religious Zionists · Benjamin Netanyahu · Israel · Gaza Strip · Bezalel Smotrich

Overview

After late‑June and July announcements outlining three new Nahal outposts on former 2005 settlement sites, the settlement agenda accelerated. On 25 July Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich said the plans were ready and that only Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu was blocking immediate construction. Hundreds of right‑wing activists marched to the Gaza border, chanting that the land belongs to Israel.

Israel has also completed a 22‑kilometre earth wall, extending Israeli‑controlled territory in northern Gaza to roughly 70 % of the strip. The settlement drive has become a central issue in the upcoming October parliamentary election, with right‑wing parties seeking to cement electoral support through the Gaza agenda. International condemnation continues, with the United Nations and many states denouncing the outposts as violations of international law.
