Israel Katz says Israeli forces will remain indefinitely in Lebanon, Syria and Gaza
Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz announced that the Israeli army will stay "indefinitely" in the security zones it has established in Lebanon, Syria and the Gaza Strip. He said the forces will remain to protect Israeli residents and communities from "jihadist elements" and to safeguard civilians in the occupied areas.
Katz's statement contradicts a recent Iran‑United States memorandum that aimed to end hostilities across the Middle East and a U.S.–brokered framework that seeks a lasting peace between Lebanon and Israel. The declaration follows reports of continued Israeli actions in southern Lebanon, including the setting up of control posts and raids on homes, which Lebanese and regional media describe as aggressive.
The policy implies a permanent extension of Israel’s presence in the three territories, raising concerns about the future of displaced populations and the broader regional security situation.
