Israel Knesset elections approach amid political deadlock

With approximately three weeks remaining until the Israeli Knesset elections, political polling shows a deadlock between major blocs, with no clear path to the 61-seat majority required to form a government. The campaign is currently centered on two primary issues: the responsibility of Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu for the failures preceding the October 7 attacks, and the future of Arab political representation in the Knesset.

Legal developments have significantly impacted the Arab political landscape. Following a Supreme Court ruling, the Joint List and the United Arab List were permitted to participate in the elections. However, Sami Abu Shuhada, leader of the National Democratic Assembly, decided to withdraw his candidacy following a court decision to disqualify him. Abu Shuhada expressed that such disqualifications represent a denial of fundamental rights and suggested a double standard in the application of law.

While the ongoing multi-front war involving Lebanon and Syria remains a backdrop to daily life, it has not become the central focus of the electoral debate. Candidates have largely maintained rhetoric focused on security and the elimination of Hamas, with Netanyahu framing his leadership as essential for managing future security threats and confronting regional adversaries.
