The United States has announced a new round of Israel-Lebanon negotiations scheduled to take place in Rome in early September. This follows a three-day technical meeting in Rome where negotiators, mediated by the US, finalized details regarding the implementation of pilot zones and other elements of a tripartite framework agreement.

Under the framework signed in late June, Israel agreed to withdraw its forces from specific pilot zones in southern Lebanon, allowing the Lebanese army to take control of these areas. While technical and military delegations have reached agreements on operational parameters, common maps, and a roadmap for future zones, challenges remain. Hezbollah has repeatedly rejected the agreement and refuses to disarm, a condition Israel has linked to its full withdrawal.

Despite a ceasefire in place since June, Israel continues to conduct precision strikes in Lebanon. The Military Coordination Group for Lebanon (MCG4L) has been facilitating communication by providing accurate information to both sides. While political discussions will continue in Beirut, Jerusalem, and Washington, the US remains focused on advancing the diplomatic process to ensure the framework does not fail during implementation.
