Israel monitors increased Turkish naval presence in Eastern Mediterranean

Increased military activity in the Eastern Mediterranean has led to heightened tensions between Israel and Turkey. While no direct combat has occurred, Israeli security officials report that the strengthening of the Turkish naval presence in the region is a cause for concern, viewing it as a power projection move linked to Ankara’s growing role in Syria.

Israeli and Turkish warships are encountering each other more frequently in both international waters and Exclusive Economic Zones. Reported interactions include close-proximity maneuvers, high-speed transits, and brief encirclements of vessels. These incidents have reportedly increased over the past year.

In response to regional developments, the Israeli Navy recently concluded its largest large-scale exercise in years, involving all its units. The drills simulated attacks on ports and maritime facilities, the obstruction of freedom of navigation, and the interception of commercial vessels bound for Israel. Although Israeli officials currently view Turkey as a competitor rather than an enemy, they noted that the strategic assessment could change at any time.
