Israel occupation of southern Lebanon continues amid rising conflict
Israel continues to occupy significant portions of southern Lebanon despite a June framework agreement intended to facilitate a phased withdrawal. Israeli Defence Minister Israel Katz has indicated that troops may not withdraw, suggesting a potential extended occupation similar to previous military presences in the region.
Following the assassination of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei and subsequent violations of the November 2024 ceasefire, Hezbollah launched rocket attacks against Israel on March 2. In response, Israel intensified military operations and reinvaded southern Lebanon, resulting in the displacement of more than 1.2 million people.
While Beirut has entered into US-brokered direct negotiations with the Israeli government, Hezbollah continues to oppose these efforts. The conflict has led to the systematic demolition of homes and infrastructure across dozens of Lebanese villages.
