Israel political deadlock fuels national unity government talks

Recent political polling in Israel indicates a deadlock between the major political blocs, making a decisive electoral victory difficult for any single faction. Polls show the Netanyahu-led coalition and the opposition are nearly equal, with seat counts fluctuating between 50 and 54 seats each, while Arab lists hold approximately 12 seats in the 120-seat Knesset.

Due to this stalemate and the difficulty of forming traditional coalitions, the prospect of a national unity government is gaining traction. Gadi Eisenkot has emerged as a prominent figure in this scenario, viewed as a candidate capable of bridging gaps between traditional blocs, including potential cooperation with both Arab parties and Haredi groups. Eisenkot’s stance on political settlements and his rejection of annexation efforts are noted as being more aligned with international preferences, particularly from Washington.

Meanwhile, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu faces increasing pressure from within his coalition and from the United States. The political influence of ministers such as Itamar Ben-Gvir and Bezalel Smotrich is described as a growing burden, both domestically and internationally. Polling suggests that Netanyahu’s handling of intelligence and security prior to the October 7, 2023, attacks remains a critical factor for voters, particularly among opposition supporters.
