Israel prepares for greater independence amid US political shifts

Ofir Akunis, the Israeli Consul General in New York, has warned of a potential shift in the historical alliance between Israel and the United States. Akunis expressed concern regarding the evolving political climate in the U.S., specifically citing the rise of progressive candidates within the Democratic Party who are critical of Israel.

Akunis noted that the trend of political opponents appearing to favor adversaries over their own government's foreign policy is a concerning development. He stated that while he hopes the United States will remain a steadfast ally, Israel must prepare to be "more independent than we were in the past" to ensure its own strategic capabilities and security.

To bolster this autonomy, Akunis highlighted Israel's existing domestic defense successes, such as the Iron Dome system, as evidence of the nation's ability to manage its own security requirements.
