Israel is navigating shifts in its relationship with the United States, focusing on both political and communal dimensions.

Ofir Akunis, the Israeli Consul General in New York, has signaled a need for Israel to become “more independent than we were in the past” due to a changing U.S. political climate. Akunis expressed concern that the rise of progressive candidates in the Democratic Party may impact the historical alliance, suggesting that Israel must rely more on its own strategic and defense capabilities, such as the Iron Dome.

Simultaneously, Israeli leaders are addressing a perceived weakening of ties with the Jewish diaspora, particularly among younger Jewish Americans. Data from an AP-NORC poll suggests that younger generations do not view support for Israel as a central component of their Jewish identity to the same extent as older generations.

In response to these shifting dynamics, officials are emphasizing the importance of the diaspora as a “strategic asset.” Itai Nixon of Israel’s Ministry of Diaspora Affairs noted, “We’re the state of the Jewish people, not just Israelis.” Lesley Sachs, chair of the Israel Movement for Reform and Progressive Judaism, expressed concern that Israel may be losing its status as a perceived sanctuary amidst rising global antisemitism. To counter this, organizations such as Taglit-Birthright Israel are working to foster personal connections through programs designed to maintain ties that transcend political controversy.
