Israel reaches four‑decade high in territorial control across Lebanon, Syria and Gaza

Since the Hamas attacks of 7 October 2023, the Israeli army has added roughly 1,000 km² of control in Lebanon, Syria and the Gaza Strip – the largest expansion of territory outside Israel in more than four decades. In southern Lebanon troops have moved close to Nabatiyeh, with about 36,000 homes reported destroyed. In Syria Israel now holds an extra 235 km² beyond the Golan Heights, while its footprint in Gaza has been steadily growing since the 2024 cease‑fire.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said the changes reflect a new security doctrine that creates three deep zones of security inside enemy territory. The expansion comes amid Israel’s regional military superiority and limited international push‑back, marking a departure from the country’s previous pattern of withdrawals from occupied areas.

Analysts note the move signals a shift in Israel’s strategic posture and could reshape security dynamics across the broader Middle East.
