Israel responsible for majority of global journalist deaths since 2023, CPJ report

A report by the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ) states that Israel is responsible for the majority of journalist and media worker fatalities recorded globally since 2023. The organization reviewed nearly 230 cases and recorded a total of 247 deaths across the Gaza Strip, Iran, Lebanon, and Yemen.

According to the CPJ, more than 240 of these victims were killed by Israel. The organization noted that Israel has killed more journalists and media workers globally than any other government since the CPJ began collecting statistics in 1992.

In its review, the CPJ removed approximately 20 individuals from its list because they were identified as combatants, and three others because they were not media workers. CPJ Director Jodie Ginsberg emphasized that maintaining the accuracy and reliability of their research is essential for ensuring accountability and justice for media professionals worldwide. The report also highlighted the difficulty of obtaining information from Gaza due to restrictions on foreign press access.
