Israel seeks more ambitious negotiations with Lebanon via US mediation
Israel is seeking more ambitious negotiations with Lebanon through US mediation, according to a spokesperson for Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. This push follows recent Israeli airstrikes in southern Lebanon aimed at Hezbollah.
Israeli officials stated that the military actions are intended to provide momentum for peace talks rather than hinder them. Israel maintains its commitment to a June framework agreement that involves the disarmament of Hezbollah, the gradual withdrawal of Israeli forces from southern Lebanon, and the deployment of the Lebanese army to the region.
Recent military activity included an airstrike in the village of Ansar that killed Hezbollah commander Ali Samir Al Haj Hassan. Lebanese authorities reported that 11 people, including three children, were killed and 19 others were injured in the strikes. Additionally, the Israeli military reported that three soldiers were seriously injured during a Hezbollah attack in a designated security zone.
Yehiel Leiter, Israel’s Ambassador to the United States, warned the Lebanese government against using recent military incidents as a pretext to withdraw from peace negotiations. The next round of US-mediated talks is expected to take place in early September.
