UNRWA Qalandia Training Centre seized by Israeli forces in East Jerusalem

Israeli security forces have forcibly seized and begun the evacuation of the UNRWA Qalandia Vocational Training Centre located in the Kafr Aqab area of East Jerusalem. The operation, which involved over 50 personnel and multiple armored vehicles, resulted in the detention of approximately 40 individuals, including UNRWA staff members.

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu stated the evacuation was conducted under his directive and in accordance with legislation banning UNRWA operations within Israeli territory. National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir, who was present at the site, characterized the action as a historic move to remove an organization he claims has ties to Hamas.

Israeli authorities and the Jerusalem Municipality maintain that UNRWA holds no legal ownership of the land. They intend to repurpose the site to build a new educational and community complex, including a municipal high school, mosques, and sports facilities, with an estimated investment of 40 million shekels.

UNRWA and the Palestinian Authority have strongly condemned the incursion, describing it as an illegal violation of United Nations immunity and international law. UNRWA noted that the center, established in 1952, provides essential vocational training to hundreds of Palestinian refugees annually, and the seizure threatens the educational continuity for these students.
