Israel signs $34 M deal to add external fuel tanks to F-35I jets

Israel’s Ministry of Defense has awarded a contract worth more than $34 million to Cyclone, a wholly‑owned subsidiary of Elbit Systems, to develop and integrate external fuel tanks for its F‑35I “Adir” fighter jets. The tanks will be based on a Cyclone design originally created for the F‑16 and are intended to extend the aircraft’s combat range, lessen dependence on aerial refuelling and give the Israeli Air Force greater flexibility for long‑range strike missions.

The programme is part of a broader force‑build‑up announced by Defense Minister Israel Katz and Defence Ministry Director‑General Maj. Gen. (Res.) Amir Baram, which includes doubling the planned F‑35 fleet from 50 to 100 aircraft and expanding the F‑15IA fleet. Officials say the external‑tank option could allow F‑35Is to strike targets deep inside Iran without mid‑air refuelling, though testing will assess any impact on the jet’s stealth signature. The contract reflects Israel’s effort to sustain aerial and strategic superiority during the ongoing multi‑front conflict with Iran.
