Poland expands F-35 fleet and anti-drone capabilities

Overview

Poland’s defence modernisation continues to broaden its aerial and unmanned-system portfolio. Building on the $4.6 billion F-35 programme, the country received its first three “Husarz” fighters at Łask in May 2026. Subsequent ceremonies in June confirmed delivery of the initial batch and a plan to acquire up to 64 jets. The United States added a further $4 billion in foreign-military financing, raising total FMF support to about $20 billion for F-35s, HIMARS, Patriot batteries, Abrams tanks and Apache helicopters.

Anti-drone and unmanned technology efforts have accelerated. The Military University of Technology (WAT) is developing the Autonomous System of Laser Weapon (ASBL) under the PERUN programme. Additionally, the Polish Defence Group (PGZ) is expanding cooperation with Ukrainian companies to develop production and servicing capabilities for UAVs, maritime unmanned platforms, and missile systems. To support these technical advancements, the Łukasiewicz Research Network’s Institute of Aviation (ILOT) modernised its T3 aerodynamic tunnel using 105 million PLN from the National Recovery Plan.

On the battlefield, the military is testing practical adaptations, such as protective cages and spatial shields to counter FPV drones. These tests coincide with intensifying domestic debates regarding mobilization readiness.
