Israel strikes Beirut, endangering US‑Iran peace talks

On 14 June 2026 Israeli missiles hit a residential building in Beirut’s Dahiyeh district, targeting a Hezbollah command centre. The attack killed three people and injured 16, prompting chaos in the Lebanese capital.

The strike occurred hours before the United States and Iran were poised to sign a historic peace agreement. President Donald Trump publicly accused Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu of sabotaging the deal, calling the operation “very small and without consequence.” Netanyahu, however, argued that the attack was a response to Hezbollah rocket fire.

Iran’s parliament speaker Mohammad Bagher Ghalibaf warned Washington that a lack of will or capability to restrain Israel would jeopardise the negotiations, while Iranian officials threatened a strong retaliatory response. The incident has revived fears of broader regional escalation and placed the pending US‑Iran accord in jeopardy.
