Israel strikes Lebanon, raising civilian death toll

Israeli military operations in southern Lebanon have resulted in significant casualties, marking a period of intense escalation despite existing ceasefire agreements. On August 15, airstrikes in the Nabatieh district, specifically in Ansar and Deir al-Zahrani, killed at least 11 people and wounded 19. Among the dead were three children and two women. While the Israeli military stated the strikes targeted ‘Hezbollah terror infrastructure,’ Lebanese Prime Minister Nawaf Salam asserted that the victims in Ansar were not military targets.

Since the launch of the Israeli offensive on March 2, the Lebanese Ministry of Health reports that the total death toll has reached 4,346 people, with 12,301 injuries. Attacks have intensified in districts including Tyre, Bint Jbeil, Nabatieh, and Marjeyoun, utilizing artillery, fighter jets, and military vehicles.

The United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) reported a surge in activity, noting an average of 137 projectiles fired daily between August 5 and 16, with peaks reaching over 200 projectiles during a single weekend. UNIFIL continues to operate in the region to manage explosive device risks and facilitate humanitarian aid, maintaining that UN Resolution 1701 remains the primary legal framework for restoring border stability.
