Israel sues New York Times over report of sexual abuse of Palestinian detainees

Israel’s government announced plans to file a lawsuit against The New York Times after the newspaper published an investigative report alleging that Israeli prison officials sexually tortured Palestinian detainees. The Israeli Foreign Ministry called the article “hideous and distorted lies,” prompting the legal action.

UN Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in the Palestinian territories, Francesca Albanese, defended the NYT report, describing it as accurate and a glimpse into a systemic problem that has existed since the founding of the Israeli state. Albanese criticised the government’s response, saying the lawsuit reflects fear of exposing long‑standing abuse.

The dispute highlights growing international scrutiny over Israel’s treatment of Palestinian prisoners and the broader debate over press freedom and accountability in the conflict.
