Israel upgrades Iron Dome with high‑power laser system

Israel’s Ministry of Defense and defence contractor Rafael announced the successful completion of a series of tests that integrate a high‑power laser, described as “Or Eitan” or “Magen Or,” into the Iron Dome missile‑defence network. The trials, conducted in secrecy, evaluated the upgraded system against rockets, cruise missiles, drones and high‑volume attack scenarios, demonstrating improved interception capabilities and resilience to sustained fire.

The upgrade builds on lessons learned from recent conflicts with Iran, Hamas, Hezbollah and the Houthis. Moshe Patel, director of the missile‑defence division, said the tests mark a major step in maintaining Israel’s qualitative edge in air defence. Yoav Tourgeman, CEO of Rafael, added that the laser addition will strengthen the multi‑layered defence architecture that has protected Israeli urban centres since Iron Dome became operational in 2011.
