Lebanon: Israeli airstrike kills seven in southern Ansar FAST-MOVING
An Israeli airstrike in southern Lebanon killed seven people and wounded three others early Saturday, according to Lebanese state media. The strike hit a residential home on the outskirts of the village of Ansar, completely destroying the building. This incident marks the deadliest single attack in the region since a US-mediated framework agreement was reached in June to reduce hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah.
Lebanese authorities reported that Israeli military activity intensified overnight, including airstrikes on the strategic Ali al-Taher ridge overlooking Nabatieh and strikes in the valley between Ansar and Zarariyeh. Additionally, Israeli forces reportedly detonated homes in the border town of Bint Jbeil and conducted operations near the Kounine-Saf al-Hawa road.
The Israeli military stated the strikes targeted Hezbollah infrastructure within a security zone in response to actions against its soldiers. The escalation occurs amid ongoing tensions regarding the June framework deal, which calls for the disarmament of Hezbollah and a gradual withdrawal of Israeli forces in exchange for the deployment of the Lebanese army. Hezbollah chief Naim Qassem has rejected the terms, characterizing the agreement as a surrender. Meanwhile, a US State Department official noted that a permanent Israeli military presence in the area would be inconsistent with the terms of the deal.
