Israeli drone strike kills at least eight at Gaza funeral

On 17 July 2026, an Israeli drone attacked a funeral procession in the Nuseirat refugee camp in the central Gaza Strip. The strike hit mourners gathered outside the Ahmad Yassin mosque for a burial of a Palestinian killed earlier that day. Local Al‑Awda Hospital reported at least seven to eight dead and 20 – 22 injured; other reports gave casualty figures ranging from seven to fourteen killed.

The Israeli military said the operation targeted a “terrorist cell” linked to Palestinian Islamic Jihad but acknowledged that civilians may have been harmed and offered no further comment. Hamas condemned the attack as a “heinous crime” and called for UN intervention. The incident occurred despite a cease‑fire agreement brokered in October 2025, which has failed to halt daily Israeli strikes. Since the cease‑fire, more than 73 000 Palestinians have been killed in Gaza, according to health authorities, and the war continues to generate civilian casualties.

The attack underscores the fragile security situation in Gaza, the ongoing violations of the cease‑fire, and the humanitarian crisis affecting the civilian population.
