Israeli airstrikes in Lebanon kill 18 and drive civilian evacuations

On 19 June 2026 Israeli airstrikes hit southern and eastern Lebanon, killing 18 civilians and injuring dozens. Smoke was seen over villages such as Nabatiyeh al‑Faouqa, Choukine and Kfar Sir, and new strikes struck near Baalbek. Lebanese ambulances, civil‑defence units and army forces were deployed to the impacted areas, where damaged vehicles and burned cars were reported. Residents fled the strike zones, creating heavy traffic on the Qasmieh bridge between Tyre and Sidon.

Israel's military said it hit more than 80 targets, killed dozens of Hezbollah fighters and suffered the death of four of its soldiers, including a senior officer. The attacks occurred days after the United States and Iran signed a framework agreement meant to launch a 60‑day negotiation process to end regional fighting. Israel and Hezbollah were not parties to the pact, and French officials urged Israel to respect the agreement, warning that continued hostilities could undermine hopes for a broader cease‑fire.
