Israeli Finance Minister Samotrich Claims Credit for Hostage Release

Israeli Finance Minister Binyamin Samotrich told a podcast that his actions were decisive in managing the Gaza war and securing the return of hostages, stating, “Thanks to me all the hostages are here.” The remarks ignited a public outcry, with former hostage survivor Or Lev denouncing Samotrich on social media and calling him a “shameful minister.” Samotrich argued that his insistence prevented an early cease‑fire and that without his red line the negotiations would have dragged on for many more hostages. He also said he rejected a proposal to release only eight hostages, telling Prime Minister Netanyahu that “there is no such thing.” The controversy revived debate over the government’s handling of the war and hostage‐release negotiations.
