Israeli forces accused of torturing Gaza flotilla activists, multiple nations open investigations

Six pro‑Palestinian activists who were part of a May 2024 “Flottille pour Gaza” were intercepted by an Israeli fast‑boat in international waters. The activists, including Meriem Hadjal, Noé Tissot and Malika Baouya, described severe mistreatment on board a container they called the “prison ship,” reporting beatings, electric shocks, sexual harassment and attempts to drown them. One activist said, “Cruel, sadique et inhumain,” while another recalled being “roué de coups” and having bruises on her chest.

The allegations have prompted criminal investigations for torture and war crimes in France and Italy, and an independent probe announced by Australia. Israeli authorities have rejected the accusations, stating they ensure “respectful and appropriate” treatment of intercepted participants. Video footage released by Israeli national security minister Itamar Ben Gvir shows the activists confined in a fenced container on the ship’s deck, sparking further international outrage.
