Israeli settlement expansion in West Bank sparks violence and arrests

Israeli Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich announced a plan to build 763 new housing units in the Eli settlement south of Nablus, expanding the settlement footprint in the occupied West Bank. The announcement comes amid rising settler‑related violence, including a deadly clash on July 24‑25 in the village of Tell where four Palestinian civilians and two Israeli soldiers, one a reservist, were killed. Israeli forces conducted a sweeping operation, arresting about 80 Palestinians and detaining more than 70 suspects across the territory, with raids reported in Nablus hospitals and other locations. Settlers also set fire to two mosques in Qusra and Kur and attacked villages such as Sarra and Far’ata. Spain and Turkey condemned the settler attacks, urging Israel to de‑escalate and hold perpetrators accountable. The intensified security measures and settlement expansion have heightened tensions across the West Bank.
