Israeli troops conduct incursion in Syria's Daraa province, UN condemns violation

Israeli forces entered the villages of Maariya and Al‑Arda in the Yarmuk basin of Daraa province on Sunday, establishing a checkpoint and dropping leaflets warning residents not to block their advance. The troops also fired artillery shells at farmland near the Quneitra‑area village of Taranja without reporting casualties. United Nations Secretary‑General Antonio Guterres, visiting Syria, condemned the incursions as violations of Syria’s sovereignty and of the 1974 Disengagement Agreement, saying they must stop and that a report will be submitted to the UN Security Council. Syrian Foreign Minister Asaad al‑Shaibani demanded an immediate and unconditional Israeli withdrawal, while President Ahmed al‑Sharaa said Damascus is pursuing a security agreement with Israel that could lead to comprehensive peace without conceding the Golan. Israeli Defence Minister Yitzhak Katz stated the Israeli army will remain in the “security zone” in southern Syria indefinitely to protect Israeli communities.
