Netanyahu Declares Israeli Forces Have Full Freedom in Southern Lebanon Amid Ceasefire Talks
Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced that the Israel Defense Forces (IDF) operating in southern Lebanon have "full freedom of action" and will remain in the security zone for as long as required to protect Israel's northern citizens. He reiterated that there are no operational restrictions and that Israeli troops will continue to neutralise threats and demolish militant infrastructure.
On June 23 Israeli gunfire near the town of Nabatieh al‑Fawqa killed two civilians, prompting Hezbollah to accuse Israel of violating the recently‑established ceasefire that has held since Sunday. UNIFIL reported no observable air attacks since Sunday but confirmed the ground killing, noting that the situation on the ground remains tense.
The incident comes as the United States mediates a fifth round of talks in Washington between Israel and Lebanon, aiming to forge a comprehensive peace and security agreement and a de‑confliction mechanism. U.S. Vice President JD Vance said progress has been made on a de‑confliction cell to prevent broader escalation. Both sides have signalled willingness to discuss limited Israeli withdrawals from parts of the occupied zone, though Netanyahu stressed that any withdrawal would be limited and contingent on security considerations.
The developments reflect the broader regional dynamic, with Iran’s backing of Hezbollah and U.S.‑Iran negotiations influencing the stability of the ceasefire.
