Israeli Military Arrests Haredi Yeshiva Students, Sparking Shidduch Crisis
Israeli authorities have intensified enforcement of draft‑evasion rulings against Haredi yeshiva students, leading to dozens of arrests. According to the IDF, 46 students were detained over Shabbat after being classified as non‑compliant with enlistment orders. Arrests have occurred at Ben Gurion Airport, at a gas station near Gilat Junction, and during other routine travel, preventing many young men from leaving the country for engagements, weddings or visits abroad.
Rabbi Shlomo Weiss, spokesperson for the Vizhnitz community in Bnei Brak, warned that the travel bans are crippling the traditional shidduch system, leaving engaged couples unable to travel for betrothals and families unable to attend weddings. He described families being “arrested in the airport in front of their children” and said the community is “in total chaos, with no one to talk to.”
The detentions have drawn sharp criticism from rabbis and Haredi leaders, who argue that imprisoning students disrupts Torah study and threatens the social fabric of the ultra‑Orthodox world. Community activists have organized protests and are seeking negotiations with military and legal officials to secure releases and halt further arrests.
