Israeli Minister Ben-Gvir's Flotilla Video Draws Diplomatic Condemnation from Europe and Arab Nations

Israel’s National Security Minister Itamar Ben‑Gvir posted a video showing the detention of about 430 activists from a recent Gaza aid flotilla. The footage showed activists being forced to the floor while Ben‑Gvir waved an Israeli flag and shouted slogans, prompting criticism that the video mocks detainees and violates basic standards of dignity.

The video sparked an international diplomatic outcry. European officials, including France’s foreign minister Jean‑Noël Barrot, who said “we cannot tolerate French nationals being threatened, intimidated, or brutalized,” Poland and Italy’s leaders, and Britain’s foreign minister Yvette Cooper, who called the video “truly appalled,” condemned the act and called for sanctions against Ben‑Gvir. A coalition of Arab and Muslim foreign ministers from Saudi Arabia, the UAE, Qatar, Egypt, Jordan, Turkey, Pakistan and Indonesia issued a joint statement describing the footage as a “shameful assault on human dignity” and a violation of international law.

Within Israel, Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Foreign Minister Gideon Sa’ar also distanced themselves from Ben‑Gvir’s actions, stating that the manner of the detention does not reflect Israel’s values.
