Israeli navy arrests seven Gaza fishermen, hurls two back into water

On July 7, 2026, the Israeli navy seized seven Palestinian fishermen off the central Gaza coast, including five members of a single family, and bound and threw two others into the sea. The detainees were named by the Union of Agricultural Work Committees, and the total number of fishermen held in Israeli prisons rose to 45. The day prior, eight fishermen had been released, highlighting a pattern of alternating releases and arrests.

Since the war began in October 2023, the fishing sector has suffered heavy losses, with 233 fishermen killed, hundreds injured, and the destruction of roughly 900 motorized boats and 700 rowing boats. The broader conflict has caused extensive civilian casualties in Gaza, with reports of more than 73,000 dead, over 9,500 missing, and 173,000 wounded, alongside massive damage to homes and infrastructure.

These developments underscore the ongoing humanitarian and economic crisis facing Gaza's coastal communities amid the prolonged conflict.
